Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the environment and community, build social connections and improve your own physical, mental health and overall wellbeing.

Volunteering at Barung is an experience in both helping and learning! 

Barung Landcare operates with a small team of paid staff, and a large number of invaluable volunteers. 

By joining as a volunteer you can support Barung Landcare’s mission in helping the environment, learn about native Australian plants and ecosystems, gain valuable skills in raising native plants from seeds, and meet like-minded people with an interest in maintaining our environment. 

Barung Landcare offers a number of pathways for the community to participate in Landcare through our various volunteer activities. These include (but are not limited to): 

  • Volunteering at our native plant nurseries
  • Helping with tree planting and weed maintenance at our site at the Maleny Community Precinct 
  • Helping to run community stalls such as the Witta Markets or Maleny Kiosk 
  • Fundraising activities 

All activities undertaken through volunteering with Barung Landcare are covered by Public Liability Insurance.

Barung Management Committee

The Barung Landcare Management Committee is currently seeking new volunteer members to join the management committee. 

The Barung Landcare Management Committee sets the vision and the purpose for the organisation, and oversees, guides and supports the direction of the Barung Landcare team.

We are seeking people with the following qualities, skills and values (but not limited to):

  • Passion for the environment
  • Passion for working with community
  • Understanding of business operations
  • Understanding of environmental conservation / natural resource management
  • Understanding of fundraising
  • Previous experience on a committee or a board
  • Collaborative spirit
  • Open-minded

Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize

This year Barung Landcare held the stand-alone Wootha Prize event, hosted for the first time at the stunning Montvale Glass House venue. This marked an exciting new chapter celebrating the essential role wood plays in our lives.

At its heart, the Wootha Prize remains a celebration of community, bringing together Barung staff, committee members, volunteers, participants, the wider woodworking community, and the families who support them. Their generosity, creativity, encouragement, and commitment continue to sustain not only this event, but also the regenerative environmental practices and relationships that strengthen our communities far beyond the exhibition itself. 

Set in the Queensland Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Wootha Prize is a national woodworking competition celebrating outstanding artistic excellence in timber. Extending beyond an artisan award, it fosters deeper connections with Australia’s unique environment and Indigenous culture. To read more about the Wootha Prize, view our page here.

This event could not happen without our volunteers, your time and generosity is what brings it all together. Tasks may include managing a component of the event, marketing, making contact with sponsors or partners, or managing volunteers. The Wootha Prize will take place on the first weekend in May.
