William Bayliss Commemorative Prize
An invitation to contribute

From 2026, the prize for Overall Winner of the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize will be known as The William Bayliss Commemorative Prize. This award honours William’s life and work and recognises excellence in woodworking and integrity in making.

The commemorative prize is intended as a perpetual tribute. Its establishment coincides with the Wootha Prize becoming a standalone event at a beautifully aligned new venue, Montvale at Montville. Through this award, William’s values – respect for materials, people, place, and sustainability – will continue to be recognised and celebrated.

Donations towards the establishment of The William Bayliss Commemorative Prize are being invited, and any contribution is warmly welcomed. Your donation forms part of the $10,000 major prize.

About William

William Bayliss: 1998 – 2024

William was not only a respected craftsman; he touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. Humble and generous, talented far beyond his years, always ready to help and consistently giving back more than he took. William’s work embodied his values: integrity, a deep love of the bush, and respect for First Nations peoples.

In 2019, William became the youngest ever winner of Barung Landcare’s Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize at the Maleny Wood Expo. In 2024 he again took honours, winning the Furniture Prize with his beautiful Mundi Mundi entry table.

Your support will help ensure that William’s energy, passion and generosity are carried forward, inspiring future generations of makers. We are very grateful to anyone who can contribute.

The William Bayliss Commemorative Prize is made possible through community support and is stewarded by Barung Landcare and the Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize.
